Volunteer Super Heros

The world is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers. ~Terri Guillemets
It was my privilege to take pictures at the photo booth for people who attended the EPIC Student Ministries Family Banquet this week. This annual event is geared around activities to help strengthen the relationship between students and their families and to orient families to the exciting programs that EPIC provides. Led by Steve and Shannon Borland and a myriad of volunteers, they provide an outstanding dinner, entertainment, inspiration and decorations, all at no cost to the student and his/her family.
This year’s theme was “super heroes”. My photo booth had several, simple props that helped people that came to get their picture taken, get into the spirit of the evening. As a photographer, here’s my take-aways from the evening.
1. Unlike portrait shooting, in a photo booth, the technical side of photography is minimized and the photography skills of getting a person to feel comfortable in front of the camera, and in this case act a little silly, is the most important.
2. You need to know your camera, and to know your camera you need to practice with it. I just got a new camera and this was the first public event I took it to. Although, most of the menus and controls were the same as my old one, I didn’t feel as much at ease as I would have with my trusty older model. That being said, the exiting part of getting a new camera is that it will allow me to do things that my four-year old camera couldn’t do. Digital cameras are like computers, technology will always be improving things at a rapid pace so you’ll have to adjust.
3. And my life lesson is: Giving to a charity gets you a tax credit, but volunteering your time, especially when it involves kids, is the best reward. Please support worthwhile organizations like EPIC Student Ministries with your time. You can see the photos of this night for a limited time in my client gallery. I’d love for you look at my other galleries as well. Have a great day, I will!
